HIV/AIDS In New Jersey
1 – New Jersey has the largest proportion of women infected with AIDS in the United States.
2 – New Jersey ranks second in the Nation for cumulative pediatric HIV cases. (Up from a rankingof third in 2000)
4 – New Jersey ranks fourth in the Nation for overall cumulative HIV cases. (Up from a ranking of 5th in 2000)
- AIDS ranks among the top three causes of death for African-American men ages 25-54 and for African-American women ages 35-44 in the United States.
- Drug cocktails have allowed many people with HIV to live much longer lives but there still is no cure for AIDS.
- By mid 2008, 35,309 people are reported living with HIV or AIDS in New Jersey.

Injection drug use and sexual contact remain the major modes of exposure to HIV infection. The proportion of reported cases with HIV/AIDS who were exposed through injection drug use (IDU) is lower than in the past, while the proportion of cases that were exposed through sexual contact is increasing.
